Coach Looze

** COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT IU SWIM CAMP **

THE STAFF

Ray Looze - Head Swimming Coach, Indiana University

Ray Looze is in his fifth year at the helm of both the men's and women's swimming programs and his eighth year of mentoring the men at Indiana University. Looze has achieved unparalleled success as both a coach and a world-class swimmer, accomplishments that he carried into his reign over the Hoosiers since his hiring in June 2002.

Since arriving in Bloomington, Looze has made it his mission to return Indiana swimming to the elite level it had maintained throughout the 1960s and 70s. To say that he has made significant progress over his first eight years at IU would be an understatement. Under his leadership, Indiana has captured four Big Ten titles and he has coached NCAA individual champions on both the men's and women's side.

Looze's first Big Ten title came in 2005-06 when the Indiana men claimed IU's first Big Ten title since 1985. In just his second season directing the women's program, he led the team to its third Big Ten title in school history in 2007. That conference crown was just the start, as the women won the Big Ten title in 2009 and again this past February, making it three titles in four years. This year's Big Ten crown was followed by a 10th place finish at the NCAA Championships. IU's top-10 finish was highlighted by the performance of Kate Fesenko, who won the 200 backstroke to become the first Hoosier female swimmer to win an NCAA championship.

Donny Brush - Assistant Head Coach, Indiana Swimming

Donny Brush is in his fifth season as an assistant coach for Indiana swimming. Brush continues to grow a sprint group which set school records in the men's 50 and 100 free and had an All-American in the 100 backstroke in 2008-09. That comes on the heels of a tremendous 2007-08 season when Brush's proteges set nine school records. The 2008 performances were highlighted by Ben Hesen, who capped off his three seasons under Brush with an NCAA title in the 100 back, IU's first individual NCAA swimming champion since 1976. Hesen's winning time of 44.72 was a new school record and the second-fastest time in NCAA history. Hesen also set a new Indiana mark in the 100 butterfly and 200 back, and captured Big Ten titles in all three events.

Pam Swander - Assistant Head Coach, Indiana Swimming

Assistant coach Pam Swander is in her fifth season working with the middle distance group at Indiana, having joined the Hoosier program after a one-year stint at Clemson University. During the past two seasons, Swander guided the development of Olympian and All-American Kate Zubkova. In her first season at IU, Zubkova assaulted the record book with new marks in the 100-yard back, 200-yard back, 100-yard butterfly, 100-meter back, 200-meter back and 100-meter butterfly. She won Big Ten titles in the 100 back and 200 back and finished third and second, respectively, in both events at the NCAA meet. In 2009, Zubkova shattered her school marks in the 100 and 200 back while winning Big Ten titles and All-America honors in both events. In addition, Swander helped coach Presley Bard (100 back, 200 back, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay), Sarah Stockwell (200 medley relay, 400 medley relay) and Donna Smailis (200 medley relay, 400 medley relay) to All-America honors. Under Swander's tutelage, the Indiana women captured the Big Ten Championship in both 2007 and 2009.

Mike Westphal - Assistant Head Coach, Indiana Swimming

Mike Westphal is in his seventh season as an assistant coach for Indiana swimming. In 2009, Westphal helped tutor Nikki White to a Big Ten title in the 500 free and placed two swimmers (White, Allison Kay) in the top-10 at the NCAAs in the 1,650 free. The Hoosiers took four of the top five spots at the Big Ten meet in the event, where IU won its second team title in the last three years. In 2008, Westphal saw J.K. Koehler earn All-America honors in the 1,650-yard freestyle and top-eight finishes from Alex Brunfeldt (500 free, 1,650 free) and Koehler (1,650 free) at the Big Ten Championships. Westphal also accompanied former IU distance standout Sergiy Fesenko and 2008 All-American Kate Zubkova to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China as a member of the Ukrainian coaching staff. On the women's side, freshman Amanda Smith made a splash at the NCAA Championships by picking up All-America honors in the 500 free (14th) after finishing second in the event at the Big Ten Championships. Over the course of the 2008 season Smith set new IU records in the 500-yard free and 400-meter free.

CAMP DETAILS

CAMP PHILOSOPHY

The IU Swim Camp offers a unique experience that no other camp in the nation can match. The ultimate goal is to educate campers on the fundamentals of technique, racing, and training in the sport of swimming, while providing an opportunity for camaraderie with swimmers from all over the nation!

CAMP EMPHASIS

During the 5 days spent at the IU-Bloomington campus each swimmer will undergo a technical analysis and strength test. Elements of the profile include stroke analysis and land strength tests. Results of the profile will be sent home with each swimmer on a DVD and results in a notebook. All swimmers will be grouped with appropriate age and ability levels through an assessment at the beginning of the camp. Each day will include 2 water workouts, a dryland workout, performance testing, educational lectures, and fun evening activities.

This summer we are offering an Elite segment as an option for swimmers 13 years and older. This segment of camp will feature an extra training session with an IU coach in the morning from 6-8am and range in yardage from 7000-8000 yards per session. The workout is in addition to the water sessions already offered with an emphasis that will focus on training and incorporating the skills learned in those water sessions. To learn more and participate in this Elite group, simply Contact Coach Looze soon after you register to reserve your spot. (Limited space in all 4 weeks)
