THE STAFF

Mick Lyon - Head Women's Soccer Coach, Indiana University

Coach Mick Lyon is no stranger to achieving success and winning championships. Before beginning his tenure at Indiana University in 2002, Coach Lyon spent nine years at Division I University of Evansville, leading their women's soccer team to compete as NCAA contenders. The 2007 IU Hoosiers made their first NCAA appearance since 1998 and advanced to the Sweet 16 by defeating Toledo and Purdue. Since taking over the helm of the IU Women's Soccer Program, Lyon's Hoosiers have gained national attention and notoriety, being ranked in the nation's top 25 in 2006, 2007 and 2009 while also having a student-athlete featured as a "faces in the crowd" in Sports Illustrated.

"Developing soccer players has always been my strength and my passion. Teaching the game of soccer to players of all skill levels - that's my love. Seeing their potential, fine tuning their skills, motivating them and increasing their confidence to compete and win - this is what Indiana Women's Soccer Camp is all about."

COACHING AND SUPERVISION

The Indiana Women's Soccer Camp has a tradition of using highly motivated club, high school and college coaches who have proven and successful backgrounds in girl's and women's soccer. Camp coaches are hired from all over, bringing regional and national strategies and ideas together. Alongside these coaches will be second-year IU assistant coach Stacey Matthiessen, who brings tremendous knowledge and experience as a former player at the collegiate and professional levels. Matthiessen started 85 career matches at Tennessee-Chattanooga, setting new school records for wins and shutouts. She also played professionally with the W-League's Arizona Heatwave before spending two seasons at her alma mater as a volunteer assistant. She joined the Indiana staff in 2009 and she teams with Coach Lyon to make a truly spectacular package of coaching.

Interaction between campers and current IU players is also an integral component of the camp, enhancing technical and tactical learning while exposing campers to next level of competitive soccer.

Supervision is a key ingredient in making the camp experience both fun and relaxing for campers. All dormitories and soccer activities are monitored by certified athletic trainers who are on duty 24 hours a day. Injuries and any sicknesses will receive immediate attention from qualified medical staff members. Camp coaches and trainers will stay in the same dormitories as the campers and are on call at all times.

THE PREMIER FACILITIES

The site of the Indiana Women's Soccer Camp is held at Indiana University, one of the leading educational institutions in the country. Located in the picturesque rolling hills of southern Indiana, IU has a strong athletic tradition, reflected by the excellent facilities utilized by the camp.

Indiana's athletic facilities are undoubtedly among the finest in the nation. Bill Armstrong Stadium, the Hoosiers' home field, and the othr excellent facilities, provide a definite advantage for the participants at the Indiana Women's Soccer Camp.

Indiana University offers sports medicine facilities to assure each camper the best possible treatment when needed. The Bloomington Hospital and IU Health Center are both located within ten minutes of the camp facilities. Quality living accommodations are an essential ingredient in a good soccer camp program. Campers will be housed two in each room in a modern dormitory adjacent to the athletic complex. Meals will be prepared under the supervision of Indiana University's professional dietitians, and served in one of the finest dining facilities on campus. All camps are housed at Briscoe Dorm.

TRAINING SESSIONS

At the beginning of camp, you will be evaluated and placed on a team led by a coach who will guide you throughout the week in both competitive games and training sessions. Your coach will emphasize technical training in small group settings to teach you modern day tactics and maximize your learning. While training sessions are intense in content, they are always led with support and encouragement. Coaches often collaborate in leading their sessions, exposing you to several styles and teaching methodologies.

THE PHILOSOPHY

The Indiana Women's Soccer Camp philosophy is to develop you as a total soccer player. No part of the game is skipped - the best defender must learn how to finish a chance on goal and the best forward must learn how to defend. You will be encouraged to play various positions to enhance your development. Total Game = Total Soccer! Soccer is played with effort and running but skill is the beauty of the game - and skill produces wins! That's why increasing your soccer skill level is the paramount priority that drives the Indiana Women's Soccer Camp.

GOALKEEPING

Often considered the last line of defense as well as the first line of attack, goalkeeping is so much more than simply stopping shots. While footwork, crosses, tipping and power saves are all defensive skills, organizing the defenders, playing off your line and sweeping the back make you a total goalkeeper and an integral part of the game. Goalkeeping campers will train as a separate group in intense morning sessions, working on skills they will then hone during team competition. Your learning continues as you evaluate decisions, watch videos and interact with a seasoned goalkeeper training staff. DUE TO THE LIMITED NUMBER OF GOALKEEPERS ACCEPTED, THESE POSITIONS FILL VERY QUICKLY.

REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

All campers who cancel, including those for medical reasons, will be refunded all pre-paid fees, except a $100 handling fee, provided they cancel before June 1st (I), July 1st (II, III & IV). Cancellations within two weeks of assigned camp will be assessed the deposit fee of $350. No refunds are given with less than 24 hours notice before the start of camp for any reason.
