Hitting - 5-6:30 p.m. (Open to Grades 1-6)
Hitting - 7-8:30 p.m. (Open to Grades 7-12) 

Schedules are tentative and are subject to change based on number of participants, weather or Indiana Softball practice.


In addition to Indiana Softball Coaching Staff, instruction will be provided by Morgan Zerkle and Gwen Svekis. Morgan Zerkle was a member of Team USA in 2016 and 2017. She currently plays professionally for the Scrap Yard Dawgs. She graduated from Marshall University in 2017 where she was a Conference USA Player of the Year and an NFCA All-American. Gwen Svekis currently plays professionally with the Chicago Bandits and recently graduated from the University of Oregon as the NFCA National Catcher of the Year and NFCA First Team All-American. In 2016, she was a member of the USA Women’s Elite Team.

Hitting Session- This clinic will focus on the fundamentals of the swing and drills to develop you into an elite hitter. Learn approach and routines to become a more consistent and explosive hitter. Slapping instruction also available.

Location: Andy Mohr Field Indoor Area at Indiana University
Catching - 5-6 p.m.
Defense - 6-7 p.m.
Slapping - 7:30-8:30 p.m.

Instruction will be provided by Indiana Softball Graduate Assistant, Morgan Zerkle. Morgan Zerkle was a member of Team USA in 2016 and 2017. She currently plays professionally for Scrap Yard Fast Pitch. She graduated from Marshall University in 2017 where she was a Conference USA Player of the Year and an NFCA All-American. As a collegiate shortstop and lefty slapper/hitter, she will be leading the defense and slapping sessions.

Instruction will also be provided by Indiana Softball Graduate Assistant, Gwen Svekis. Gwen Svekis was a member of Team USA in 2016 and currently plays professionally for the Chicago Bandits. She graduated from the University of Oregon in 2017 where she was an NFCA All-American and National Catcher of the Year. She will lead the catching sessions.

This Skill Work Series is open to any and all entrants, only restricted by age. Registration will be accepted until time of the session. No refunds will be issued; however, a credit can be applied to a future Win the Day Softball Clinic.

THE COACHES

Shonda Stanton
Head Softball Coach, Indiana University

Shonda Stanton begins her first year as the head softball coach at Indiana University after a highly successful 18-year run as the softball coach at Marshall. During her time at Marshall, Stanton became the winningest coach in program history with 560 victories and posted 12 seasons with 30 or more wins.

“We are thrilled to have Shonda Stanton as the new head coach for our softball program,” Glass said. “Widely respected, Shonda is a winner known for her recruiting acumen, strong player development, and commitment to graduating confident young women. Shonda is a great fit for Indiana University.”

In 2017, Stanton led Marshall to a program-record 42-12 mark and an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. During the season, Marshall posted a 17-game winning streak in 2017 and a 20-4 conference record leading to Stanton being picked as the Conference USA Coach of the Year.

During her tenure, Stanton guided the Thundering Herd to five conference championship games and led the team to two Mid-American Conference championships, a Conference USA regular season championship and Conference USA Tournament title.

Under Stanton’s tutelage, Marshall had 76 all-conference selections and nine conference Player, Pitcher or Freshman of the Year accolades. Off the field, Marshall posted a team GPA of 3.0 in every semester of Stanton’s career and have had 103 named NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes.

As a player, Stanton was a four-year starter at UNC Greensboro and lead the team to back-to-back Big South Conference championships. In addition, Stanton scored 66 runs during her senior campaign, good for eighth in the nation.

Chanda Bell
Assistant Softball Coach, Indiana University

Chanda Bell begins her first season as an IU assistant after spending four years on Stanton’s Marshall staff in the same role.

In the four-year stretch that Bell and fellow first-year IU assistant coach Kendall Fearn were with Stanton at Marshall, the team posted a winning percentage of .616, the second-best four-year run in program history.

During her playing career at Kentucky, Bell left the Wildcats as the all-time winningest pitcher and was the first in team history to record 200-plus strikeouts in all four seasons. Additionally, she was the first Wildcat to throw a no-hitter, as well as the first to toss a perfect game. Bell still sits atop the Kentucky record book with 910 career strikeouts and owns three of the top four single-season strikeout marks.

Kendall Fearn
Assistant Softball Coach, Indiana University

Kendall Fearn is in her first year as an IU assistant coach after four years on Marshall’s coaching staff.

“I am incredibly proud to bring Kendall and Chanda with me to Bloomington,” said Stanton. “Our student-athletes are getting two of the best rising coaching stars in the business.”

Fearn, who will work primarily with hitting and the outfield, was named as Marshall’s associate head coach prior to the 2017 season. During her four seasons at Marshall, Fearn guided the Herd bats to a .313 average while posting three of the top four scoring seasons in program history. This past season, Marshall led the country with 162 stolen bases and posted a .308 batting average, best in C-USA.

Fearn came to the Thundering Herd after two seasons coaching at her alma mater, UNLV, and a year at Georgia Southern. During her playing career, Fearn was a two-time Mountain West All-Conference pick and started 227 games at first base and third base. Fearn guided UNLV to a NCAA Regional appearance in 2009 and finished her time at UNLV ranked in seven different categories in the record book.

Morgan Zerkle
Graduate Student Manager, Indiana University

Former Marshall standout Morgan Zerkle joined the Indiana Softball coaching staff as a graduate student manager in January 2018.

A 2017 NFCA All-American, Senior CLASS All-American and Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American, Zerkle was selected by the Scrap Yard Dawgs in the 2017 NPF Draft. The native of Milton, W. Va. finished her Marshall career atop the record books in batting average (.451), triples (14) and stolen bases (162). In addition, she was second all-time in slugging percentage (.594), on-base percentage (.489), runs (181), hits (289) and total bases (381)..

Zerkle was named the 2017 Conference USA Player of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year, in addition to being a four-time All-Conference and NFCA All-Region selection. Off the field, Zerkle was a member of the Conference USA All-Academic Team every year in which she was eligible and was regularly named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Gwen Szvekis
GRADUATE Assistant, Indiana University

Gwen Svekis, a former Oregon standout and 2018 NFCA National Catcher of the Year, was announced as a volunteer assistant coach for Indiana Softball on July 30.

The Davie, Fla. native was a three-time All-Pacific Region selection for the Ducks, capped by a senior season that saw her earn First Team honors on top of being named an NFCA First Team All-American and First Team All-Pac 12 honoree. During the 2018 campaign, Svekis batted .324 with 57 hits, 17 home runs, 60 RBI and 42 runs scored as she led Oregon to the Women's College World Series for the third time in her four seasons.

Following her time at Oregon, Svekis was drafted by the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch league as the third overall pick. In addition, Svekis was a member of Team USA's 2016 Women's Elite Team and participated in the World Cup of Softball.

Jake Combs
Director of Operations, Indiana University

Jake Combs joined the Indiana Softball program in Summer 2014 as a student assistant. Combs’ primary duties include throwing batting practice, assisting with infield/outfield drills, keeping statistics and setting up practice. Combs travels full-time with the team and also lends a hand with numerous day-to-day activities, such as team meals. Along with his experience with the Hoosiers, Combs has worked in travelball with Indiana Magic Gold and Indiana Dreams. Combs, a native of Carmel, Ind., is majoring in Sport Marketing and Management with plans to pursue a career in coaching.
